Turns out Instagram is copying BeReal and do they have no shame?

At least Instagram is having as bad of a 2022 as the rest of us.

This year Instagram has come under a lot of fire for trying to copy TikTok and we expect the onslaught to continue with IG straight ripping BeReal with their new 'Candid Challenge'.

Members of the Instagram royal family Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian even called out the app for wanting to be TikTok, since the app has been pushing short-form videos, AKA reels, onto more and more people’s feeds, which no one asked for.

A self-proclaimed leaker/mobile developer/reverse engineer on Twitter called Alessandro Paluzzi discovered the copycatting, and it looks like Zuckerberg and his team at Meta have run out of ideas to keep the younger generation on their app.

Read this and if you tell me that is not the exact same as BeReal you are BeingFake.

“Add other’s IG Candid to your story tray. And every day at a different time, get a notification to capture and share a photo in 2 minutes.”

Paluzzi tweeted out screenshots of the ‘new’ aspect of Instagram, and come on Zuck, at least change it a little.

A spokesperson for Instagram talked to Engadget and said that right now, the Candid Challenge is just an “internal prototype” that they are “not testing externally”.

So, like, technically they haven’t even copied BeReal so back off. Plus, the Candid Challenges would be added to your stories, not their own feed, which is completely different.

If you don't know what the heck BeReal is or how it works - where have you been? - you can study up on it here:

Insta do have a bit of a history of copying stuff from other popular apps, we’ve mentioned the TikTok/reels debacle, but you may have forgotten they also ripped their stories feature from Snapchat, but that kind of made sense for the app.

As Vox reported, stories meant people could post less interesting pics to Insta that wouldn’t mess up their feed, or they could just use the app without feeling left out.

“People don’t climb mountains, eat at fancy restaurants or take beautiful vacation photos everyday. That meant people weren’t posting to Instagram every day, either.”

But now, anyone that is gonna post a story can and will post a story, so there’s no need for candid pic x selfie combos while on the gram, that’s what BeReal is for!
