Miles Teller just about broke the internet earlier this year when Top Gun: Maverick hit cinemas and THAT volleyball scene made audiences around the world fall in love with him.
The impact of Teller’s volleyball shimmy was immediate - Berlin’s 1986 song ‘Take my Breath Away’ started trending, memes were made, and there was a sudden influx of guys sporting aviator glasses and a thick 80’s inspired stash.
But Miles Teller’s wife Keleigh Sperry was not so keen on her husband's nostalgic upper-lip fuzz.
She made him shave off his Top Gun moustache as soon as filming for the movie wrapped - preferring the clean shaven look that Teller has sported in his previous films ‘Whiplash’ and ‘Divergent’.
In a recent magazine interview Teller confessed "My wife made me shave it immediately".
Well Keleigh… you may prefer a clean shaven Miles but Top Gun: Maverick's $1.2 billion in box office takings, 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, and just about every video on my For You Page this June would disagree. We loved Teller’s Maverick Mo.
Not only did Miles Teller’s Top Gun moustache suit him, but his thick blonde stash contrasted the clean shaven look Tom Cruise has always sported in his action films.
In the film Tom Cruise’s character finds himself training a specialised detachment of Top Gun pilots, which brings him into contact with Teller’s character ‘Rooster’ the son of Maverick’s (Tom Cruise) late best friend ‘Goose’ Bradshaw.
The 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick was a major international success so it seems inevitable that we will get to see a Top Gun 3 and Teller will have a reason to grow back his iconic Top Gun stash.
Nothing is set in stone yet, but rumours of a Top Gun 3 have been circulating around Hollywood and Teller is on board with a potential follow up. It seems that if (…or let's be realistic when) we get to see Top Gun 3 is up to Tom Cruise.
In a recent interview Miles Teller said of Top Gun 3 “That would be great, but that’s all up to TC. It’s all up to Tom. I’ve been having some conversations with him about it. We’ll see”.
Tom Cruise has made 8 Mission Impossible films so it seems unlikely that he would dodge the chance to revisit the Top Gun world, and when he does we only ask one thing - that Rooster can keep his mo.
