Netflix has announced a pretty steep ‘extra member’ fee - at least for my budget anyway - and it has some users of the popular streaming platform tossing and turning on whether they want to continue their subscriptions.
So if you’re leeching off your parents, bestie or even your ex’s Netflix account you may want to delete all traces because you soon might need to start coughing up some contribution.
The streaming giant announced earlier this week that it will soon be charging customers more on their monthly subscription fee if their username and password have been passed around.
I’m ashamed to say mine may have been passed around more than a vape at a house party…
This all comes from Netflix wanting to minimise the use of shared accounts between households.
The decision has already been rolled out in Latin America (unlucky), charging excess fees for anyone deemed an ‘extra member’, meaning anyone placed outside of your immediate household who cheekily logs in to watch a few series.
In their announcement, Netflix shared: “After listening to consumer feedback, we are going to offer the ability for borrowers to transfer their Netflix profile into their own account, and for sharers to manage their devices more easily and to create sub-accounts ('extra member') if they want to pay for family or friends.”
The streaming service has yet to announce how much it will charge customers for the ‘extra user’ service, but based on the trials in Latin America, it’s looking likely to be a quarter of the price of the full subscription costs.
Though that’s not confirmed, we could be looking at an extra around $3-4 NZD, based on the new pricing that has already been rolled out in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru.
But don’t start frantically kicking people off your account just yet, we’ve got until early 2023 to delete any traces of your login history on your ex’s account.
