'This hurts': Terry Crews, Brooklyn Nine-Nine fans mourn death of 'Captain Holt' André Braugher

"One of the greatest TV characters of the 21st century."

André Braugher, best known for his role as the deadpan and hilarious Captain Raymond Holt on 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine', has died at age 61.

According to Deadline, the actor passed away on Monday (US time) due to an unknown short illness.


His Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-star Terry Crews has led the tributes writing: “Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honoured to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent.”

“This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you.”

He continued: “Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. My deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like.”

Prentice Penny, a showrunner for the sitcom also mentioned some of his favourite moments with the star.

He said he loved André's humour and the two shared some giggles on set.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine producer and director Ryan Case said: "I can’t stop crying. I have so many wonderful things to say about this amazing man who was so immensely talented and kind to me. So many of my favourite moments editing and directing were because of him. Gone way way way too soon.  My heart aches for his family and friends.”

“It makes me feel better to gush about him,” she added.

Fans are devastated to hear about the star’s passing, with many flooding to social media to share some of their favourite moments from the actor.

“May André Braugher rest in peace. He did an amazing job playing Captain Holt on Brooklyn 99 always bringing a smile to my face. lots of love to his family and friends” wrote one user on X (formerly Twitter).

Another said: “Captain Holt is one of the greatest TV characters of the 21st century.”

Such a huge loss, gone too soon. Thank you André for all the laughs.
