Jaden Smith is set to open his first restaurant for homeless people after the success of his food truck initiative.
The son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith started his own food truck back in July 2019 with the goal of providing rough sleepers with free vegan food.
The ‘I Love You’ truck has since gone on to serve thousands of people in the Los Angeles’ Skid Row area and in Harlem, New York City.
He hopes to continue his initiative by creating a new restaurant where customers with money will be encouraged to pay it forward, and the homeless will eat free.
Jaden said: “If you’re not homeless, not only do you have to pay, but you have to pay for more than the food’s worth so that you can pay for the person behind you.”
He added that the I Love You idea is “a movement that is all about giving people what they deserve; healthy vegan food for free.”
We think this initiative is amazing and we would love to see more like this being supported in New Zealand. Our closest is Merge Café on K’ Road, where every dollar spent goes towards providing meals, a safe space and engaging conversation for our homeless whanau in New Zealand.
