Drag Race Down Under Conspiracy Theory: Is RuPaul Actually There?

trending 11/05/2021

There’s no doubt that Drag Race Down Under is a vastly different production to the American and even UK instalments of Drag Race, and people all over the internet haven’t hesitated to comment on this fact.

The editing is completely different, the sets are different, the pace of the show and even the way the queens interact with the judges is different. Rather than logically associating these discrepancies with smaller budget or different crew-members, the internet has come up with a conspiracy theory that host RuPaul isn’t actually on set.

Now, how can the show be called RuPaul’s Drag Race without RuPaul!? Let’s dive into the theory.

The theory can be traced back to TikTok which, frankly, is where all great ideas are coming from these days. App-user Amber Tara uploaded a video where she questions the strange editing and wonders if RuPaul was actually present on-set for the second episode of the season.

“I don’t think he’s actually there… So, who are they talking to when all this is happening,” Amber questions, adding that the Drag queens must be speaking to a green screen.

Abbie Chatfield also weighs in, adding that there are “no scenes where you see queens with Ru, first of all, the responses seem like part of a script.”

“I’ve clocked three times now that queens have said ‘I can’t believe I’m talking to RuPaul right now’ and that to me, says a producer has gone ‘Alright, so we’re gonna edit this because of COVID obviously so say something like you can’t believe that RuPaul is Infront of you right now.’”

Even if RuPaul IS there and this theory is totally wrong, the editing “feels clunky, It feels awkward, it feels unrealistic,” Abbie comments.

The theory has since gained a bit of traction, with 90 Day Fiancé star Erika Owens weighing in with some thoughts on a particular moment in the show where RuPaul could be standing Infront of a green screen.

We personally aren’t sure how to feel about this theory, as there was SO much press coverage when RuPaul and his team originally arrived in New Zealand to shoot the show… but we can’t recall ever seeing any photos of Ru pop up during his stay here.

What do you think? In the meantime, we’re gonna head over to TNVZ OnDemand to rewatch the episodes and do some sleuthing.
