When the world was stuck in lockdown Zendaya was working on her upcoming netflix film ‘Malcolm & Marie’ with co-star John David Washington. When the film's trailer was released there was backlash regarding the twelve year age difference between Zendaya and John.
Zendaya has been in the public eye since she was thirteen years old and most of her career she’s been playing teenagers. Her biggest roles include Rocky from disney's Shake It Up (2010) and Rue from Euphoria (2019). Zendaya told People tv that people forget that she’s a grown up because they still see her as a teenager.
People often forget — which is understandable because I’ve been playing 16 since I was 16, you know — [but] I am grown… I knew that, as I grow and as I evolve, there would be that moment where I could play someone my own age.
Her co-star John David Washington said in an interview with Variety that he wasn’t concerned about the twelve year age gap as Zendaya is a grown woman who is actually more of a professional than he is as she’s been acting longer than him.
"You have to remember, also, people grew up with me as a child," Zendaya said in an interview with Daily Pop,
"It's like watching, I guess, your younger sibling now, you know, they're grown...You're not ready for it."
We are so excited to see Zendaya step into a new role and break out of her child-star image despite it reminding us that we aren’t kids anymore!
Malcolm & Marie will be released this coming February 5th on Netflix.
