Liam Payne confesses struggle with mental health issues while in 1D

It's no surprise that being in one of the biggest boybands ever and being recognised all over the world would take a toll on your mental health.

That was the case for Liam Payne while constantly on tour with One Direction. While talking with The Sun, Liam revealed there was some nights while on the road that he just shouldn't have been going on stage:

I shouldn’t have been able to do as many shows as we did, if I’m honest about it, if I’m brutally honest about it, Going out and putting that happy smile on my face and singing the songs, honestly, sometimes it was like putting on one of those costumes, going out there and, underneath the costume, people don’t really see what’s going on.

In 2015 the boys had to cancel one of their shows in Ireland due to one of the bandmates 'taking ill' but in truth, Liam said it was because he was struggling to cope with the breakup of his girlfriend at the time:

I let it get to me that day and I wasn’t in a good place. Unfortunately I was going through a rough time and I let it get to me a little bit too much. That was it.

Even though so many fans, including us, were gutted when One Direction announced they were going on hiatus, Liam said that was one of the best things that could have happened at the time:

Even though I know fans are not mad about it (hiatus)... we needed it. We needed a little bit of time away from each other. We needed a realisation point to find the love for it again, rather than it just becoming a job.

We're glad he can talk about this stuff now. It sounds like he should not have been working to the schedule he was!

It also sounds like he is in a better place now. Much love, Liam!
