Meg

Tell me more about the album, about what we're going to be getting from Special.

Lizzo

Ahhhhhhh New Zealand. Special, I like how you guys say ‘special’.

Meg

Oh, you do that really well!

Lizzo

I named the album after a song. There's a song on the album called Special. And I think the song really sums up everything. I wrote it. I wrote a Special the song after I put out Rumors and I felt weird about the way people were receiving me.

Like, not the music, but just me 'LIZZO' as an artist in the mainstream, I hadn't put out anything since becoming commercially successful, and it was really interesting to see how people thought about me in the public. There were good things and there were definitely very mean, bad, hurtful things. So I named it after that song, which I think it sums up the album so beautifully because this album is definitely a love letter to loving yourself and being able to be like, I've worked so hard to love myself.

I've worked so hard on regaining my confidence and I'm not going to let the world take it away from me.

Meg

Oh, yeah, that's so good. I mean, I saw you in custom Gucci at the B.E.T Awards looking absolutely amazing.

Lizzo

Just custom Gucci

Meg

How much does that change when you like skyrocketed into fame - like being able to go to the BET awards in custom Gucci compared to a few years ago, was it difficult to find designers back then?

Lizzo

You know a lot changes when Anna Wintour says you're dumb if you don't dress Lizzo, a lot changes. And I am grateful. I feel like it was a little harder to find stuff I had to make a lot of on my own so I would work with designers and a lot of designers that were just starting out as well who could just make things for me because I couldn't get it in time.

Or designers were like, Oh, we don't have enough fabric for you. And I think it is I think it is really sweet now that the world is embracing a plus-size diva like me and as a model and, you know, as a sex symbol and, you know, as high fashion, I just hope to that it doesn't end with me that this isn't a trend and that like more big girls are seen as high fashion and valuable in the space.

Meg

You're a huge Beyonce fan. How does it feel? That your albums are coming out at the same time? You know you're going to be at the top of the charts alongside your idols.

Lizzo

Wow, you are being very gracious with your predictions for sure! I can only hope to share a spot on the charts with Beyonce. I am very grateful that she's putting it out later. Thank you, gir! She's looking out for me. I'm just. I'm just excited. I wonder what is going to sound like right now. I'm here for it.

You know what I'm really happy about is it’s going to be a lot of feel good music out this summer and this year. People really need it.
