Demi Lovato has addressed being misgendered in a series of tweets to encourage and educate others.
In honour of Nonbinary Awareness Week, Demi Lovato has opened up about about being misgendered. Since coming out as nonbinary earlier this year, the artist has taken to Instagram to confront individuals mispronouncing their pronouns.
"I felt the need to post this because I often find that the change in pronouns can be confusing for some, and difficult to remember for others," Demi wrote on Tuesday in the caption of their Instagram post about the situation.
"It’s all about your intention. It’s important to me that you try, but if you make a mistake, it’s okay."
A similar message was repeated as the post continued. "If you misgender me — That's okay🙏," Demi wrote.
"I accidentally misgender myself sometimes! It's a huge transition to change the pronouns I've used for myself my entire life. And it's difficult to remember sometimes."
Demi went on to say that it's all about the intention. "As long as you keep trying to respect my truth, and as long as I remember my truth, the shift will come naturally💞," they said. "I'm just grateful for you effort in trying to remember what means so much to my healing process 🙏🙏🙏."
This comes after Lizzo had to correct a paparazzo who misgendered Demi a week ago, so this note comes as no surprise. Lizzo was asked if she wanted to collaborate with Demi, who was referred to as "she" by the paparazzi.
In a now-viral video, Lizzo corrects the paparazzo, saying, "They. Demi is known as they."
Demi later expresses her love for Lizzo by posting the video to their Instagram Stories and saying, "@lizzobeeating you f*cking queen," Demi wrote. "I love you 😘 thank you 🥺🙏,"
Now this is the kind of love and support we need in 2021!
This week is all about awareness, acceptance, encouragement and educating ourselves in support of our non-binary fam!
