A judge has granted the pop-icons request to personally address her father Jamie Spears’ status as her conservator.
Following the release of documentary ‘Framing Britney Spears’ awareness surrounding Britney Spears’ conservatorship has been high, with online petitions being set up as part of the ‘Free Britney’ movement.
The singer’s father and court-ordered conservator Jamie Spear’s returning to court today, where news broke that through an attorney, Britney has requested a hearing take place where she would address the court directly. Judge Brenda Penny granted the request.
Britney Spears, who rarely attends these hearings, will speak in court about the status of her conservatorship on June 23rd at 1:30pm Pacific time.
Jamie Spears has exercised control of his daughter’s finances and career since 2008 and in November, a judge declined to remove her father from this position as her conservator. Instead, the court appointed an independent firm as a co-conservator. The court-ordered conservatorship began following Britney Spear’s public mental health struggles in 2007.
My client has informed me that she is afraid of her father,
attorney Samuel D. Ingham told the presiding judge. “She will not perform again if her father is in charge of her career.”
Prior to the new documentary, public outcry dubbed the #FreeBritney movement which has been gaining traction for well over year, with the release of Framing Britney Spears adding fuel to the fire. Britney shared to Instagram that she “cried for two weeks” after watching part of the high-profile documentary that explored her career.
Britney’s brother, Bryan Spears, did a rare interview in July 2020 where he spoke out about his sister’s conservatorship.
“She’s always wanted to get out of it. It’s very frustrating to have-whether someone’s coming in peace to help you or coming in with an attitude, having someone constantly tell you to do something has got to be frustrating. She’s wanted to get out of it for quite some time.”
Britney’s long-time pal Paris Hilton also recently spoke out regarding Britney’s conservatorship, adding that she knows how it feels to have little control over one’s own life.
“After just working your whole life and working so hard, she’s this icon and I just feel like she has no control of her life whatsoever and I just don’t think that’s fair.”
