Most people didn’t even realize this live action Pinocchio film existed… Until it was nominated for two Oscars.
The film, directed by Matteo Garrone and starring Roberto Benigni is an Italian production and was nominated for two Oscars in Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling (both of which it lost to Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.)
Comedian Paul F. Tompkins took to twitter wondering “When did they slip a new Pinocchio past me?”
“The whole Pinocchio live-action film feels like a reverse Mandela effect where it happened, but we all don’t believe it did,” mused actress Angelique Rivera.
Other curious Twitter users also chimed in after looking up imagery from the film, which they were clearly horrified by.
To make things even better – This isn’t the only Pinocchio remake we could be seeing in the near future, as Disney are also producing their own live action remake that will star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hanks and Luke Evans. And – if that’s still not enough Pinocchio for you, Netflix is also preparing its own stop-motion version of the Disney classic for a 2021 release.
Clearly multiple Pinocchio remakes was something we didn’t ask for, but maybe it could be just what we needed.
