Carole Baskin rose to fame as part of the Tiger King documentary on Netflix last year, and despite notorious Joe Exotic hiring a hit man to kill her, Carole says she would support his early release from a 22-year sentence.

Joe Exotic, self-proclaimed “Tiger King” reached new heights of fame when the Netflix documentary of the same name became one of the most hyped viewing experiences of 2020.

The seven-part series took viewers into the world of Joe Maldonado, aka Joe Exotic, a flamboyant tiger zoo owner from Oklahoma, and his nemesis, Florida animal rights activist Carole Baskin. Now the phenomenon has been revisited by famed journalist Louis Theroux, who has known Exotic and Baskin for just short of a decade.

In 2019, the former owner of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park in Oklahoma was convicted on 17 charges of animal abuse and two counts of attempted murder for hire for a plot to kill Big Cat Rescue CEO Carole Baskin.

Despite this, Louis Theroux argues that it was “hard not to be charmed” by the star – suggesting that this is what gives him a power over people.

Shooting Joe Exotic, Theroux’s 90-minute documentary on the truth behind the Netflix Series that shook the nation during the first COVID-19 lockdown, features a raft of unseen footage and new interviews. The documentary also provides some level of justice for Carole Baskin, who undoubtedly became the victim of online and physical harassment as well as conspiracy theories tying her to the disappearance of her second husband Don Lewis.

Joe Exotic’s hatred for Baskin started with her lobbying clients in an effort to stop Exotic’s touring petting zoo in its tracks, and it has ended with Baskin taking ownership of the imprisoned Joe Exotic’s zoo in Oklahoma. It would be hard for anyone who once called themselves a ‘Joe Exotic Fanatic’ to continue to deny his part in abusing endangered animals, as Louis Theroux’s documentary includes censored footage of some pretty heartless acts.

However, Carole Baskin is far more forgiving than we would be and has made an offer to help Joe Exotic reduce his prison sentence, which he was seemingly accepted. Earlier this month, Baskin’s husband Howard revealed that the couple would support Exotic’s early release from prison if he were to admit that his exploitative work with tigers and other animals was wrong and express support for the Big Cat Public Safety Act.

Howard added “If he were to do that, it might position him in a positive way for a pardon, and frankly, I might be willing to go and urge at least a reduction in his sentence.”

Baskin also added that she would only help the zoo owner if he took action by providing information to authorities about other big cat handlers in the United States and worked with legislators to end cub-handling.

In a crude and dramatic fashion that you would expect from Joe Exotic, he told Entertainment Tonight that it was “time for Carole and Howard to put up or shut the hell up because I’m accepting their offer. And I’m gonna take it one step further than that, OK?”
