Look out password sharers, Netflix is cracking down on ‘account borrowers’ with a new test feature that asks “Is this your account?” The pop up says,
"If you don't live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching."
A warning has been popping up and requesting people to verify that it is their account with a verification code. Some users on Twitter have been getting the pop-up but luckily have been able to use the ‘Verify Later’ button. It’s not clear when this will start to become more widespread but this is your warning that you might eventually get kicked off of your ex’s account!
In 2016 Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said,
"Password sharing is something you have to learn to live with because there's so much legitimate password sharing, like you sharing with your spouse, with your kids....so there's no bright line, and we're doing fine as is."
It seems that with the rise in competition Netflix is wanting to crack down on account sharers that aren’t in the same household so that those users have their own accounts.
A spokesperson from Netflix told People,
"This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so,"
We haven’t seen anyone in New Zealand have this issue yet but be prepared that you might be kicked off of mums account soon!
