You thought a covid test up the nose was bad, China's checking the other end

Residents in Beijing have been subjected to anal swabbing to test for the coronavirus. Experts believe it is more accurate specifically in testing those who are asymptomatic. Not everyone is on board though as all experts are split believing that the traditional swabbing of the throat and nose is the best and least invasive method.

Anal swabs need to be inserted 2-3cms and rotated a couple times, to then be put in a sterile container. Overall the proceedure takes approximately 10 seconds.

Due to the inconvenience of the anal swabbing the method doesn’t happen often, only to selected key groups at quarrantine centers. Anal swabbing isn’t a new occurance either, it’s actually been happening since last year.

Coronavirus experts that support anal swabbing believe that COVID stays in the anus longer than it does in the nose or throat.

"If we conduct anal swabs for nucleic acid testing, it would increase the detection rates of patients and lower the chance of a missed diagnosis."

On social media people are commenting that although its low harm, its still extremely humiliating.

"I've done two anal swabs, every time I did one I had to do a throat swab afterwards - I was so scared the nurse would forget to use a new swab."

So if you need to get a swab anytime soon just remember that it could be worse. It's probably a lot nicer to have a swab in the throat than this alternative method.
