Always wanted to have emojis in your number plate? Yeah neither...
This is very much one of those things we never knew we needed, and aren't really sure we want tbh. But want it or not, people in Queensland, Australia will be able to personalise their car number plates with emojis as of next month.
We kinda feel like this is a bit like your parents trying to be young and not quite pulling it off...
Personalised Plates Queensland (PPQ), the state's official license plate vendor, already offers a range of personalisation options, like different colours, themes, and logos of sports teams. A spokeswoman for the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland, Rebecca Michael said that offering emoji was a natural extension:
"For quite some time we’ve seen that you can support your favorite team or your favurite town with a symbol on your number plate. And using an emoji is no different."
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news though: you can't have a plate with ONLY emoji, and the choices are restricted to only five choices - so no eggplants or peaches soz.
You can only choose the crying laughing face, the sunglasses face, winking face, smiling face or heart eyes. Kinda boring if you ask us - should chuck some random animals or symbols in there we reckon, especially for the price of $475 AUD. Yikes.
"Clearly the government is trying to sex up number plates, with a view to making more money, and I can understand that,” Queensland Law Society president Bill Potts said in response to people thinking they might be distracting.
"But the purpose of number plates is for the police to be able to identify vehicles. How do you write down the emoji in your number plate after an accident?"
Very fair point, but the emojis are for decorative purposes only apparently, and don't form part of the resgistration number. Prob for the best.
Easier to remember if you're ever involved in an incident though - you're bound to remember someone pretentious with a crying laughing emoji on their plate.
