Demi Lovato has deactivated her Twitter account following backlash over jokes she made about 21 Savage.
Memes hit social media after the news spread that 21 Savage had been arrested after overstaying an expired visa. He was in America after coming over from the UK in 2006.
"The 21 Savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl," Lovato wrote as Super Bowl LIII unfolded.
Lovato's mentions and IG comments quickly become flooded with criticism, and some fans even unfairly poked at Demi's struggles with addiction in the past. "If you're going to come at me for making a joke, try coming at me with something original not involving drugs," Demi responded. "Fuck Twitter. This is why I don't tweet anymore."
Meanwhile, artists in the hip-hop community such as Wale, Offset, Talib Kweli, and Lil Yachty each fired back in defense of their friend, 21 Savage. "Why is somebody freedom funny ... I don’t get the joke," Folarin replied. "A lot of people were sending you love light , prayers etc . When people were making jokes about u at a rough time. A lot of people. Bless up."
Lovato attempted to clarify her intentions at the time. "Wasn't laughing at anyone getting deported. I know that's not a joke.. not have I EVER laughed at that. The meme I posted/was talking about was of him being writing with a feather pen. Sorry if I offended anyone. But it's no excuse to laugh at someone's addiction let alone their OD," she wrote.
Lovato concluded: "Lastly, I wasn't making fun on anything having to do with deportation or even anything against him. I was laughing at who the fuck knew 21 was British? Literally no one. That's it. It doesn't go deeper than that. I'm sorry if I upset people".
