In an unexpected announcement during Super Bowl LII, Netflix aired a 30-second Cloverfield sequel trailer before revealing it will premiere immediately after the Super Bowl.
The Cloverfield Paradox comes after months of delays, 10 years after the original film and two years after 2016's 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Unlike 10 Cloverfield Lane, the story of The Cloverfield Paradox is directly tied to the original.
It follows a group of international astronauts left isolated and fighting for their survival on a space station where they are working to solve a massive energy crisis on Earth.
The Cloverfield Paradox is produced by JJ Abrams and marks the feature directorial debut of Julius Onah.
It stars Selma's David Oyelowo and Belle's Gugu Mbatha-Raw in the lead roles.
This is the first time Netflix has announced a film just hours before it premiers, bypassing a traditional release with press and trailers.
"Extremely excited for The Cloverfield Paradox, directed by Nigerian-American Julius Onah. Extremely unexcited they're just dropping it tonight with absolutely no notice, after a 30 second trailer that didn't even mention who's in it or that it was dropping tonight," TV writer Demi Adejuyigbe wrote on Twitter.
"It's f**king dropping tonight get ready my respected and beloved friend," the Netflix US Twitter account wrote.
Netflix told Newshub the film will be available on New Zealand Netflix tonight.
