8 workout trends to keep that summer bod moving into 2018

Just because summer's here doesn't mean you have to let all your hard work from the year slip away! (Or that it's too late to start...)

2017 was a year for many workout trends, but unlike other fads you don't have to leave them in the past. Whether you've been committed to one of these workout styles all year or you're ready to mix it up, here are the eight workout trends we're definitely keeping around in the new year:

1. Group Workouts

This one's a trend for a reason - group fitness classes are super motivating and so much fun. Whether it's with a group of your friends or just flying solo, you'll always feel like you're part of something and the energy of the people around you will push you further, plus you get to listen to all of your favourite tunes.

Most gyms around the country offer awesome group fitness classes that you can get involved in, like LesMills with their world-famous classes that include everything from dancing to weights training to mixed martial arts and more. There's something for everyone and you'll leave feeling super energised.

2. HIIT Body-Weight Training

You don't need to use free weights and barbells to get those muscles working. High-intesity interval training has been a super trend this year and for good reason - it's a great way to burn body fat quickly.

Basically HIIT body-weight training involves a series of intense exercises performed in quick bursts alternating with short low-intesity recovery exercises. Perfect for a quick backyard workout in the sun to burn off those extra Christmas calories ;)

3. Digital Workouts

Summer can be a busy time what with all the festivals, parties and sunbathing to do, which makes squeezing in a workout seem a little tricky.

That's why it's the perfect time to make the most of all the quick workouts that are available online - for free! From apps to Youtube channels, there are unlimited workouts out there for every style - just give it a quick Google and find something that works for you. You don't have to make a trip to the gym AND you have more time to enjoy all that summer fun! Perfect.

4. Foam Rolling

We saw a real trend in foam rolling this year - using a firm piece of foam to roll out any muscle tension and stop soreness. All the Insta-stars were doing it, but the technique actually caught on from pro athletes, trainers and therapists, and is super helpful to return your muscles to normal function after work outs.

Yes it hurts, but you'll feel much better for it afterwards - even if it's for rolling out all those sore muscles from dancing all night.

5. Boxing

All the Victoria's Secret Angels have been doing it throughout 2017 (Gigi Hadid we're looking at you), and clearly it's working some magic.

Not only does boxing give you a full-body workout; building muscle and getting that cardio at the same time - it's also a great stress-reliever. Instant therapy session and a good workout? Yes please.

6. More Meditation

We love a good meditation session - just taking a few minutes out of your day to close your eyes, focus on your breathing and let your thoughts do their thing. Just like physical fitness, the mental aspect is super important for our health and well-being.

If you haven't tried it already, give an app like Headspace a go, or have a look on Youtube for some other options.

7. Barre Classes

Barre classes were a big hit in 2017, a nice alternative to your typical "do burpees until you collapse" workout. No thanks. Barre is a ballet-inspired isometric strength training workout, incorporating elements of yoga and pilates. You don't have to be a ballerina to give this workout a go - it can cater to all fitness levels and is really fun to try with a group of your girls.

Class options have popped up all over the country, so you should be able to find one near you!

8. Online Yoga Subscriptions

Ok, yoga has always been trendy, but it seems to have picked up some steam in recent years and moved more into full-blown workout territory. But you don't have to pay for a membership to that super expensive studio that seems more like a fashion show than a place of exercise. There are so many decently priced subscriptions for yoga online that will give just as good of a workout, teach you all the techniques, AND you don't even have to leave your house.

Yup, this one definitely isn't going anywhere.

So don't let yourself slip into the "ah well, I'll try again for next summer" mindset - get out there and join the trends. There's nothing wrong with conforming here!
