ZOOEY DESCHANEL ran home from school in a fit of tears every day - because her mean-spirited classmates spat on her.

The Elf star, who now counts a slew of celebrity pals among her roster of friends, was cruelly bullied in high school.

She tells Allure magazine, "Girls spit in my face. People were so mean to me. I'd cry every day."

Deschanel wasn't deterred and she went on to study at NorthwesternUniversity in Illinois - however her experience wasn't much better.

She continues, "I went to Northwestern because I had gone to a really non-traditional high school. I was like, 'It'd be cool to have a traditional college experience'. Then I was like, 'Oh, but none of these people understand what's cool about me. My specialness is not appreciated in this place.'"
