Loulou De La Falaise, designer Yves Saint Laurent's longtime muse, has died at her home in France.

The English-born aristocrat was 64. De la Falaise started working for Laurent in New York in 1972, designing jewellery, accessories, and clothing for his haute couture and ready-to-wear lines.

Her love for colour inspired the designer, and she was his muse for his signature Le Smoking jacket.

Laurent once said de la Falaise had "an extraordinary lightness of touch, along with a faultless critical view of fashion."

When her mentor retired in 2002, she launched a label of her own and ran two boutiques in Paris before becoming a jewellery designer for Oscar de la Renta.
