More than 30 firefighters are currently in Avondale, Auckland after a tornado tore through the suburb and its streets this afternoon. Several houses have lost their rooftops and one house was apparently struck by lightning. Wairau Avenue is said to have been the worst affected and has been closed off. There been no injuries confirmed at this stage.

A resident in the area, Mr Robertson, said, "The sky was so dark. Then a piece of corrugated iron went flying past the window. The noise sounded like a truck."

Today's tornado occurred just over four months after a tornado hit Albany on the 3rd of May this year.

If you captured the tornado on camera or film, please let us know and send through to The Edge!
