Stephen Moyer's proposal to Anna Paquin came as a shock to the star - because marriage was something he had always ruled out of his life.
The couple met on the set of True Blood in 2007 and the Brit actor proposed last summer (09).
Despite being dad to two young children from previous relationships, Moyer had never considered marriage - but he knew Paquin was the one for him and was determined to make the blonde beauty his wife.
He tells the New Zealand Herald, "It felt ridiculous to call the person that you really are going to spend the rest of your life with your girlfriend.
"And so I felt like it should be something more than that with Anna. I felt like she should have a title, even if it means I could just joke around and call her 'the missus' and make lots of wife gags.
"It certainly surprised me more than anyone else. I mean, my friends are beyond shocked. Marriage was something that I was never, ever going to do. Nobody was more shocked than Paq (Anna) was. I should have got the (St) John's Ambulance crew when I proposed."
