What was supposed to be a thrilling ride has turned into something much scarier for two dozen people stuck on a roller coaster at a Six Flags amusement park in Maryland.

A statement from the park said the Joker's Jynx ride stopped on a section of track 13.7m above the ground. All riders are secure and there are no injuries.

Fire crews have manoeuvred a cherry-picker alongside the stuck car and are in the process of getting people down, but officials say it will take some time before everyone is back on solid ground.

"This will be a long-term rescue," fire chief Marc Bashoor tweeted.

All passengers are being evaluated by emergency medical personnel as a precaution.

In July, 25 people were left hanging upside down nine metres in the air after a roller coaster at Six Flags' Los Angeles park derailed and smashed into a tree.
