Hi, I’m Ruby Frost and this is my song
Water To Ice.
This is a love song about two outsiders who create their own worlds, by telling
stories and using creativity and joy… to turn everything they see upside down.
What
is your single about?
‘Water To Ice’ is a love song about
two outsiders who create their own worlds, by telling stories and using
creativity and joy… to turn everything they see upside down.
They don’t fit in but they don’t really want to…
because it’s more colourful being storytellers together. They see the world
through their multi-coloured lenses.
Where
did you record this single, and who helped you out?
I recorded the vocals here at Roundhead Studios
(with Bassy Bob) and then hopped on a plane and finished recording the song in
New York – at Gigantic Studios with producer Chris Zane. He has an insane
studio, which is where I finished my album. He still let me keep my Garageband
loop in there though, which is how I originally wrote the song ha…
Have
you got a video out, if so what is the theme/story behind the video?
Yes! Special Problems created the video, which definitely captures the
dynamics of the song. From the bleak-looking start of the song which says ‘I
lay dormant, until you made a cameo’… to the colourful, almost overwhelming,
choruses which show the creativity and love and imagination that the song talks
about.
Who’s
in your band?
It changes from time to time, but it’s always Jimmy
Mac (or ‘Friendrock’) who plays drums for me, and samples things, and triggers giant
electronic sounds. We work together to craft how the live show is going to be,
and get in other musos every now and then. I play synths and an MPC live, as
well as sing.
Have
you got any tours coming up?
I’m planning the VOLITION tour at the moment! Can’t
announce the details yet, but I want to celebrate my first album coming out, so
we’ll be playing as many shows through NZ as we possibly can.
Already some of my favourite shows have been getting out of Auckland and
playing to new audiences in Wellington, or Dunedin… it’s a lot of fun playing
somewhere new.
Have
you got an album coming out soon?
My debut album VOLITION will be coming out in early
June. I’m so ridiculously excited to share it with people… it’s been a 2-year
project, and I got to work with my dream producer on it (Chris Zane, he also
produces for Passion Pit and other great bands like Holy Ghost!).
The songs are a combination of dark and sad (I wrote these near the start of
the project when I was dealing with an awful relationship split) to triumphant
and empowering… The title track VOLITION is all about learning to do things of
your own volition and use your free will… being confident to do whatever it is
that you want and not letting anyone push you around. I wrote lots of short
stories in the album art to explain the journey of the songs. I want people to
understand where I’m coming from…
