Rosie Huntington-Whitely was so shocked when director Michael Bay asked her to audition for the latest Transformers movie she thought he was joking.

The moviemaker approached the British model to replace Megan Fox as the robot franchise's leading lady after working with her on a Victoria's Secret commercial, and Bay reveals she was stunned to be asked to audition for such a high-profile role.

He tells Britain's Evening Standard, "Out of 500 women around the world there was something about her. I saw her on a Victoria's Secrets commercial. I didn't think I'd ever, ever hire a model and there was just something about her.

"When I was talking to her and I said 'Would you ever want to get into movies' and she said 'I'd love to' so I wrote her an email. I said this could be a life changing thing, these emails don't really happen much in life and would you be interested in auditioning for me and she thought I was joking. And she freaked out. But she did a really good job. She comes off as really sincere. She's got a lot of natural talent."

Huntington-Whiteley stars alongside Shia LaBeouf in Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
