Beauty Bible gets you up to speed with the safest and most effective ways to remove your makeup...
Removing your makeup before bedtime is a must, and in order to wake up with fresh, glowing, clear skin you need to do it properly – this means no traces of foundation left lurking in your hairline and ZERO mascara clumps. Leaving traces of makeup behind overnight can cause blockages of your pores which can cause imperfections - and your skin needs time to breathe and clear itself out.
Oil Cleansers: There is a whole lot of buzz surrounding oil cleansers right now as they remove all makeup super easily without pulling your skin or drying it out. Don’t be concerned about pimples either as there are plenty of oils that are great for the skin.
Oil cleansers are great on their own, or for getting rid of makeup before you cleanse. They are also good for using with cotton buds when fixing up makeup mistakes. Remember not to wash the oil off with water, but to simply wipe it off with a tissue.
We love Dermalogica Pre-Cleanse which is a hardworking formula that gently removes traces of make-up and grime, without upsetting your skin, before you cleanse - it really is the easiest way to get clean skin, fast.
You may like to invest in some Sweet Almond or coconut oil from your local health shop - these make great oil cleansers and you can use them directly out of the bottle. Olive oil straight from your pantry is also fine.
Foaming cleansers: They transform into an airy mousse or foam for delightful soap-free cleansing which leaves the skin fresh and clear. These are great to keep in the shower too.
Cleansing wipes: Face, neck and eyes are efficiently cleansed in one single step – the perfect no fuss way to cleanse! These are great for the times you would be tempted to fall into bed without washing your face, and re-doing your makeup during the day - so keep them for these occasions and use a proper cleanser at all other times. (Hot hint: they are also great for getting stains out of clothing in an emergency)
Milk and cream cleansers: Perfect for super sensitive or dry skin as it cleanses and softens without stripping or drying.
Take note: If you suffer from tightness after rinsing your cleanser off this is often to do with the water drying your skin out so most cream or milk based cleansers are designed to be wiped off with a tissue rather than water - a good one to try is Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, or Dermalogica Ultra-calming Cleanser.
REMOVING EYE MAKEUP
Its best to start by removing your eye makeup as this can be the most difficult part - especially if you use waterproof mascara. Moisten a cotton pad with a little bit of remover that is specifically designed for eyes and gently wipe each eye. Close your eyes and carefully rub downwards on the lashes. Repeat this a few times until all traces of mascara are gone. In place of eye makeup remover you can also use oils but never use regular makeup remover on your eyes.
Remember the area around your eyes is much more delicate than the rest of your skin so you want to avoid rubbing and pulling as this can damage the sensitive skin and cause early signs of aging.
REMOVING THE REST
Be sure never to use your standard bar soap on the face. Wet your face and apply the cleanser, and be sure not forget about your neck. Really massage it in as this is a great way to stimulate the skin. Avoid the eye area.
Using a cotton pad apply a toner over the entire face and neck as this will remove any last traces of makeup, dirt and oil that your cleanser may have missed. The toners also reduce pores, eliminate oil and refine the skin. ;
