Movie bosses have denied reports film fans were paid to cheer during Tom Cruise's trip to India on Saturday (03Dec11), dismissing the allegation as "completely ludicrous".

Cruise was greeted by an ecstatic crowd when he arrived in the city of Mumbai during a promotional campaign for Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

Several publications in the region later reported the throng was made up of extras who were given $3 and a free meal for their attendance - but bosses at Paramount Pictures have now spoken out to dismiss the reports.

In a statement obtained by The Huffington Post, a representative for the movie company says, "Tom Cruise is a massive star and attracts huge throngs of fans as he travels the world promoting Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. The only people paid were performers who danced outside the venue. The idea that fans were paid to cheer is completely ludicrous and entirely false."
