Kelly Osbourne says her weight loss has been a “complete journey”.
The TV star has shed an impressive 69 pounds in the past few years. Although she is thrilled with her appearance, the star insists it has been a tough road for her both mentally and physically.
“It has been a complete journey. People, for some reason, think this happened overnight and it hasn’t. It has been almost four years I’ve been working on this and I stand by what I say, you have to get your mind in the right place before you ever start to change your body,” Kelly told UK TV show Daybreak. “Because if you aren’t happy with who you are you will never be happy with yourself whether you are skinny or not.
“I get asked all the time, ‘What was it like growing up in the public eye?’ I made a lot of mistakes and I was very insecure and I fed into what the media said about me because I found that it was easier than fighting to show them who I really was.”
Kelly continues to follow a sensible diet and also regularly exercises. She says her mother Sharon Osbourne has helped her to realise she needed to take control of her life and her own happiness.
“If you look at pictures of me and how unhappy I really was, you can see it in my eyes,” she explained. “But my mom would always tell me, ‘If you want to change something you can change it.’ It’s just that I didn’t want to change because I cocooned myself into a bubble of self-medicating and numbing myself and I can’t lie I thought, ‘If I just take a couple more of these I won’t wake up tomorrow and it will all be done, who cares.’ I woke up the next day and thought, ‘You actually thought that about yourself, you need to sort that.’ I called my mom and that day I was in rehab… I didn’t think I would make it to 28.”
Kelly has a close bond with her mother and the pair spend a lot of time together. Sharon helps to keep Kelly motivated – and the younger star is always impressed by her mom’s fitness levels.
“I worked out with my mom this morning and she literally kicked my bum in the gym. I kept giggling at her because she doesn’t make a sound, nothing, I am so proud of her,” she smiled. “I was there lifting weights and really struggling and my mom is just there on the treadmill. It was so funny.”
