Jared Let kicked off the 2014 Oscars on by taking home the Actor in a Supporting Role honour for Dallas Buyers Club.

The movie star and rocker continued his awards season winning streak on Hollywood's biggest night, claiming the first prize of the ceremony for his portrayal of transgender AIDS sufferer Rayon.

After collecting the award from presenter Anne Hathaway, Leto paid tribute to his mother Constance for "teaching me to dream" and sent out a special message to political protesters in the Ukraine and Venezuela, where violent clashes between civilians and police have escalated in recent weeks.

He said, "To all the dreamers around the world watching this tonight in places like the Ukraine and Venezuela, I wanna say we are here and as you struggle to make your dreams happen, to live the impossible, we're thinking of you tonight."

Leto closed out his speech by dedicating the award to AIDS victims around the world and thanking the cast and crew of Dallas Buyers Club for helping him to transform into Rayon.
