Seen Dane Rumble wearing some funky jewellery and wondered where he got it from? It is more than likely his own brand, created and designed by himself and Scott Nicols.
Megan Slovak catches up with Scott of NZ jewellery brand Culet about designing, working with Dane and the glowing appraisal from Adam Lambert!
Who is Culet?
Culet .. pronounced (Que-lay) is a collaboration between myself, Scott Nicols musician/jeweller/designer, and Dane Rumble Musician/designer. We combined 3 years ago with a passion to design and create jewellery that we wanted to wear and share with our crew
How did Culet come to fruition?
I’ve been in the jewellery trade for the better part of 9 years, Dane rolled into the shop to get a custom piece made… he mentioned that he loved the process and how it all worked. I said I wanted to leave who I was working for to create a new company with a refreshing new style of jewellery. And to my surprise Dane was like “yea bro I'm in … lets do it.” 3 years later we here we are.
Who's in charge of the designs?
No one’s in charge as such, the normal process is Dane and I sit round a table and brain storm a cool theme. Then we sketch as many designs based around the topic as we can think of. Once we have a base of designs we refine them and spend countless hours working on the designs to get them to a point in which we are happy with. Nothing leaves our doors unless we are 110% stoked on it.
Who are some of your fav jewellery designers?
Hmmmmm its hard one as we don’t really know many our focus is keeping our brand original and as unique as possible……but people we look up to are New Zealand brands like Huffer, Stolen girlfriends club..
Is Dane's music like his mistress? Ever got into arguments over which is more important?
Haha, as I am the dummer in His band.. Whenever he’s away I’m away. And while we are away we are constantly looking for new stockists and new areas to sell our piece’s and grow our business. We work non-stop and very very hard.
Adam Lambert was wearing a necklace from your new Blackwater Collection, how did he get his hands on that?
Drew Neemia from C4 Select is a good mate of ours, he rocks our Jewellery and while Interviewing Adam he pointed out the jewellery and mentioned he loved it. And Drew said have it which was great! (Watch Drew give Adam the Culet necklace)The next night I saw Adam wearing it on Campbell live.
How did you feel when you saw an international artist rocking your necklace on TV?
I must admit, it was a massive complement having someone like Adam Lambert notice one of our piece’s, but then to see him wearing it in an interview was just epic! very very cool to see him rockn it.
Who else besides Dane and Adam can be seen wearing Culet?
We have a number of Ambassadors some of them are… C4 select Drew Neemia/ D.J Karn Hall/ presenter Amber Peebles/ Midnight youth/ we also supply jewellery for many many NZ music videos
What's the dream for Culet?
To continue to grow our presence in NZ and eventually become a serious high fashion jewellery exporter. But all in all we are living the dream; we love what we do and hopefully our passion shows through in the quality of our work
