British rockers Coldplay deliberately scaled back on publicly campaigning for good causes amid fears fans would see them as "hollow".

The band gained a reputation for promoting worthy organisations, and frontman Chris Martin even famously appeared on stage with cryptic messages written on his hands during the height of the Yellow hitmakers' support of the Make Trade Fair drive.

But they have since made a concerted effort to downplay their support for various charities in public, because they didn't want to appear false by backing so many initiatives.

Martin tells The Sunday Times Magazine, "The word 'campaigning' makes me uncomfortable. At the time I was writing on my hand, we definitely were campaigning. Now, we like to do it more subtly. You can see who we support at a concert or on our website, but we don't like to be so shove-it-down-your-throat-y (sic)... I only know I want to scale it back.

"I'd rather it's like, if you want to know what we think, then you can find it, rather than, 'Here's what I think!'. We used our voice on Make Trade Fair, which we still believe in... (But) if we changed causes as often as we changed clothes, it would start to be a bit hollow.

"The list of things we care about gets longer as we get older, but it just wouldn't work to go: Make Trade Fair! Save the rainforests! Be carbon neutral!"
