Your skin acts as a natural barrier, keeping out dirt while retaining moisture and some oils. But just like the rest of your body, it needs to be cleaned...

Cleansing should be done daily with a cleanser appropriate to your skin type.

Dry Skin: If you have dry skin you need a cleanser that won't remove any more moisture from your face than it has to. Dermalogica's Essential Cleansing Solution is a milky, water soluble, soothing emulsion that rinses off easily.

Oily Skin: You need a light, non oil-based cleanser that will dry up some of the grease from your face. Neutrogena's Deep Clean facial cleanser with oil control dissolves dirt, oil and make-up in the pores, before removing dead surface skin that can dull the complexion. Best of all it rinses clean, without leaving any pore clogging residue.

Sensitive Skin: You need a cleanser that is milder than most so as not to irritate your skin. Products with natural ingredients often work best, so try Living Nature's Vitalising Cleanser. Made using New Zealand plants, honeys and clays, this cleanser is gentle enough to use on the most delicate skins.

Normal Skin: For those who have the benefit of normal skin, Nivea Visage makes a great gentle, alcohol free, dermatologically approved facial cleansing cream that is easy to use in the shower.

How to Cleanse your Face:
You may have found a good cleanser, but there is a technique to using it correctly. Begin cleansing your skin by pressing a flannel soaked in warm water to the face, before taking off make-up with a proper makeup remover. Then pour a small amount of cleanser (about the size of the 20c piece is sufficient) on to a cotton square. Wipe the cleanser in upward strokes, before rinsing again with water.

Once A Day is Fine:
To improve your complexion, wipe away impurities and pollution and remove make-up, you only need to cleanse your skin every day. But despite the 'twice a day' perception, cleansing the face at night should be enough for most people.

Over Doing It:
Yes, you can get too much of a good thing and over cleanse the skin. Unfortunately, over cleansing strips the face of oils needed to keep it healthy and balanced and can lead to rashes, dry patches and adult acne. If your skin feels taut and tight after cleansing you could be over cleansing or using a cleanser too harsh for your skin type.
