NZ Fashion Label Brooklyn Zoo are quickly catching the attention of NZ Celebs even Dane Rumble was sporting their sweatshirt at EDGEtravaganza!
Their clothes are unique, edgy & embrace the urban culture of New York that we all dream of.
We caught up with head honcho & designer Joel Williams from Brooklyn Zoo to get all the info on the brand that’s turning heads all over the place!
Who’s involved in the design process of the brand?
Well just me at the mo. I have designed all the branding, website, clothing and graphics. I have a few close friends who come fabric hunting and give their valued opinion on styles/trends/cuts etc..
How long has Brooklyn Zoo been around?
We officially launched on the 9th of May 2011 but it has been in the making since mid 2010.
What’s the story behind the name ‘Brooklyn Zoo’?
I searched long and hard through dictionaries, the thesaurus and synonym websites. After looking at over 10,000 names I shortlisted a page of favs. Brooklyn Zoo came from the urban dictionary. The ‘Brooklyn’ depicts my obsession for the empire state and everything that goes with it. The ‘ZOO’ captures my design aesthetic, my uniqueness and desire to be original. It gives me room to move.
What is it about New York that inspires you so much?
That’s tough. I have always been obsessed with NY just like so many of us. Everything is bigger and better, more culturally rich with beautiful grand architecture. Each borough has its own flavour but all ties in to NY. They say you can always spot a New Yawker a mile away. There is just something special about the city. It is really the centre of the universe where everything is the greatest.
Tell us about your latest collection.
Well summer 2011/12 is currently in construction. The Brooklyn Zoo summer party will be huge and will unveil the collection so I don’t want to give to much away but the collection is very iconic and draws influence from the 20’s, 30’s and early 90’s and will feature a vast colour palette as well as drawing a conceptual high end aesthetic.

5 Boroughs Sweater / Vinyl Sleeves.
What’s next for Brooklyn Zoo?
Our summer collection launching at our Brooklyn Zoo’s VIP Summer Party later on in the year also getting stocked in some of New Zealand’s top boutiques!
