Perfectionist Brandon Flowers struggled to record his first solo album away from The Killers - because he was "too involved" with every track.

The rocker has stepped away from the hit group to produce his first solo release, entitled Flamingo, while his bandmates enjoy a hiatus.

And he admits he was stunned by how much "harder" it was working in the studio on his own.

He says, "I've never felt great about The Killers records. I've never felt like any of them were this perfect, cohesive thing. We struggled with that. So now I'm making it harder on myself.

"Maybe I micro-manage too much. I think it's just that you're so close to it and worried about it and want it to be perfect so maybe I just get too involved.

"I have fantastic hearing and in the studio I hear every little thing. It could be a little edit or a mistake that nobody else hears deep in there - and I find it. I do make musicians re-do little bits but I'm not too bad. I've seen people worse than me."
