The Beach Boys have distanced themselves from a legal complaint which takes aim at Katy Perry over her hit single California Gurls - insisting it was not their idea to threaten court action over the song.

Executives at the band's Rondor Music record label served Perry's Capitol Records bosses with a legal notice, claiming a line in Snoop Dogg's rap infringes copyright of the band's 1965 hit California Girls.

The lyric, "I wish they all could be California Girls", was reportedly removed from Perry's song following the complaint, which demanded a writing credit for original Beach Boys Mike Love and Brian Wilson.

Reps for the pair have now spoken out about the legal tussle, insisting they did not encourage their record label bosses to take action.

A spokesperson for Wilson tells the New York Post, "Rondor owns the track and called Brian and Mike, saying they were going to complain. Brian likes Katy's record and doesn't know where the situation stands."

Love's rep adds, "Mike and Brian wrote the song... but any legal action is up to Rondor."

Both stars have publicly praised Perry's track, with Wilson telling the Los Angeles Times, "The melody is infectious".
