Adele has made history at the top of the U.S. pop charts - her 18-spot jump to number one this week (beg05Sep11) is the biggest in the Billboard Hot 100's 53-year history for a non-new release.

Kelly Clarkson still holds the record for the greatest leap - her My Life Would Suck Without You shot up 96 places to land the top spot in 2009. But that was in the song's second week.

Adele's ballad Someone Like You, which claimed the number one spot on Wednesday (07Sep11), was released in February (11).

The track sold 275,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan, in the week ending 4 September (11), following Adele's performance at the MTV Video Music Awards on 28 August (11).

She spent seven weeks at the top of the U.S. pop charts this summer (11) with Rolling in The Deep.
