British soul star Adele is on doctors' orders not to speak or sing for a whole month after a stubborn bout of laryngitis refused to clear up.

The Rolling in The Deep singer was diagnosed with laryngitis in May (11) and was forced to scrap several dates in America after a specialist warned her she risked damaging her voice if she performed.

But, after resting for weeks, her throat problems have refused to go away and she has now been banned from performing and even chatting for a full four weeks.

A source tells Britain's News of the World, "Adele's voice is very special. But if she continues to abuse it in the way she has, then she could lose it completely."

The star recently quit smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol in a bid to improve her vocals, but decided to quit her healthy living plan after finding the lifestyle "grim".
